I am a freelance writer and a journalism professor at Western Kentucky University. I have written for such publications as Mother Jones, The Guardian, Wired, Jezebel, The New Republic, and Rolling Stone. My work focuses on gender, reproductive health care, American evangelicalism, and right-wing extremism.
I’m also the author of No Choice: The Destruction of Roe v. Wade and the Fight to Protect a Fundamental American Right, published in October 2022 by Hachette’s PublicAffairs imprint.
I am the cohost of American Shrapnel, a forthcoming podcast from AL.com that examines the case of Eric Rudolph in the context of today’s white power and right-wing extremist movements.
I hold degrees from Middle Tennessee State University and the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
